Prince Hall Freemasonry (also known as African American Freemasonry) was named after Prince Hall (c. 1735–1807). He was an abolitionist known for his leadership in Boston's free black community and for being the founder of Prince Hall Freemasonry. He advocated for black children's educational rights and was involved in the back-to-Africa movement. In the late 1700s, he was regarded as one of the most powerful free black leaders.

Mays, Kweisi Mfume, Richard Pryor, A. Philip Randolph Prince Hall, Ben Franklin, Benjamin Banneker, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and several presidents, including George Washington, James Monroe, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Gerald Ford, were all Masons.
